Insurance Requirements for Packaging UPS/FEDEx

Both carriers will take your money for insurance, but not necessarily payout a claim. The main determining factor is “sufficient or insufficient packaging.” Insufficient packaging is “at least” 2” from the edge of the box to the item inside. So a painting that is 48x48x2, would need a box 52x52x6, which would 168 DI, thus too big for UPS or FedEx to be insured. You can certainly pay them for the insurance and ship a box smaller (say 50x50x4), but for them to pay you if it is damaged would be another story, as they would measure the item, and measure the box and determine “insufficient packaging” and deny the claim. You could ship many times with insurance and not have a claim, and wonder way this one time, when you have claim they denied it. Above is your answer.

Insurance Requirements for Freight

Freight carriers have different levels of liability, with used items being pretty much the same at around .10 to .50 per pound. New items shipped can have up to $25.00 per pound. It all depends on the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) “item number” placed on the Bill of Lading (BOL) when shipped. That NMFC class and items number relates directly to the freight carriers liability. A licensed freight forwarder broker (www.freightforwarding.com) will be able to answer all questions pertaining to your freight shipment. Also, additional insurance can be purchased to supplement any shipment from your packing and crating company.

Insurance for High Value Art and Antiques

Freight carriers will only insure art up to max of $5 per pound under the proper NMFC numbers, and used antiques are only valued by their weight, and liability of .10 to .50 per pound. As supplemental cargo policy is needed, the packaging requirements for this insurance is a crate. They understand how a crate can protect the item inside over any cardboard box and reduce their claims. Also, a crate can be built to create the best packaging for your valuables.
